The Press Conference – Episode #1

The Press Conference: Episode 1

 Reporter:

Welcome to the team, Coach Spooner. I hate to be the one to ask, but why do you believe you are fit to bring the Giants back into a competitive state in the league?

Coach Spooner:

Well first off, thanks for having me today. I’m excited to be back in the league after a couple years of hiatus. I had a great conversation with commissioner Adelmann on the phone last week and the work he and his co-commish..What’s his name again? Jimmy Pinos? Well, regardless… They have been great to me and regardless of what is said about the leadership of RZ…it’s top notch!

Now back to your question, I can’t predict the future. What I can do though is tell you this team will be ready to play every single week. If the guys on our roster aren’t ready to put in the work needed to re-build this franchise, then it’s time they look in the mirror and move on. I’ve been with this organization before and I’m familiar with our values and core belief. It won’t happen overnight, but we will be competitive for as long as I am here, I promise you that.

Reporter:

There’s been some rumors that you aren’t happy with Ronald Darby. Where does he fit in on your future plans?

Coach Spooner:

Great question. Darby is a hell of a person and a hell of an athlete. He’s getting paid to be an elite #1 corner and he needs to produce at that level. I’m not going to get into the weeds about his future with us or how I see his contract playing out. He needs to perform just like the other 52 guys on our roster. There are no free handouts.

Reporter:

This team hasn’t won a game in 18 months, it’s been heavily documented that while you were in Carolina, you made some questionable GM decisions. For the sake of New York, can you state that Goff and Barkley will retire as Giants?

Coach Spooner:

Look… I don’t want to dwell on the past. The moves I’ve made in the past I stand behind and believe it was for the best of the organization moving forward. With that said, Saquan is a generational talent. His contract is up next year and I hope he wants to be in New York as bad as we want him here. As you reported last month, we extended Goff for several years so obviously he will be a key part of our team moving forward. Quarterbacks are the most important position in the NFL and we feel that we have a top 10 QB on our roster.

Reporter:

Your division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, just hired a new coach around the same time as you. What do you know about the new hire and do you anticipate them being a competitor in the near future?

Coach Spooner:

Who? I don’t follow what goes on in the rest of the division. I’m focused on the New York Giants and our opponent in the next week. Coaches will come and go; that’s for you guys to report on. I could careless who the coach is of the other 31 teams. My focus is on winning and developing the players on this roster.

Reporter:

Danny Dimes…after being drafted in the first round, his development has been astonishingly mishandled from lack of playing time to being benched for Goff. With Goff’s new contract, what is the future for Danny?

Coach Spooner:

Daniel has been a great locker room guy for our organization. He’s usually one of the first here and the last to leave. While some may say Goff has been a negative to his development, I would argue that getting the opportunity to learn under Goff has provided a great chance for him to figure out what it takes to be an NFL quarterback. I can’t comment on the future for Jones as that is really up to him. If he wants to be a starting quarterback, we’ll honor any trade request he may have.

Reporter:

Last question, as the off-season approaches what are the top priorities for you in rebuilding this roster?

Coach Spooner:

Our top priority is winning games so we will do the things needed to get to that point. We have a great core of young players currently and over the next five games we plan on getting some of our young athletes more playing time. We should have a top five draft pick that we will take the BPA on our board. If I told you everything, it wouldn’t be much of a plan would it?
